C3 Stop and Start and SensoDriveAt the 2004 Paris Motor Show, Citroën is unveiling the C3 Stop and Start: the first mass-market vehicle to feature the innovative Stop and Start technology.
Based on the Pack Clim finish, the C3 Stop and Start offers extra features such as air conditioning with automatic temperature control, a refrigerated glovebox, an automatic front windscreen wiper, automatic headlamps and cruise control. Real advantages with immediate benefits for passengers A more relaxed and enjoyable drive With its exceptional - and immediately perceptible - benefits, the C3 Stop and Start is a more relaxed and undemanding car to drive, particularly when the engine is in standby. hearing comfort for passengers, and respect for other people; hearing comfort also, with the instant engine start-up, which is silent and transparent to the occupants; physical comfort, owing to the absence of engine vibration. This relaxed approach does not detract from driving pleasure. Quite the contrary. Stop and Start uses a discreet easy-to-learn technique that requires no change in driving style and that actually enhances driving pleasure. Lower fuel consumption and CO2 emissions Reflecting Citroën's active environmental policy, the advantages of the C3 Stop and Start also include lower fuel consumption and reduced CO2 emissions. Stopping and starting the engine repeatedly no longer causes excess fuel consumption. The reversible alternator and electronic fuel injection bring fuel savings of around 10%, or 18 g of CO2/km, in the city. Over a standard combined cycle, savings are close to 6%. Using this technology, alongside the SensoDrive gearbox and the 1.4i 16V engine, the C3 Stop and Start offers consumption of 5.7l/100 km over a standard combined cycle. When traffic is heavy, fuel savings can rise to 17%. Affordable technology Sold at an affordable price, the Stop and Start system reflects Citroën's policy of making new technologies - such as the SensoDrive gearbox - widely available. Simple and reliable technology managed electronically Simple operation
engine temperature too low; battery charge level too low; in extreme outside temperatures (below -10°C, above +30°C), when the air conditioning is on; when the difference between the requested temperature and the ambient temperature is too great; activation of windscreen demisting / defrosting; activation of reverse gear. The "Stop & Start" system is reactivated automatically whenever the car is started. Reliable architecture The system comprises two key components: a 2 kW reversible alternator performing the functions of both starter and alternator (supplying electricity to the onboard network), replacing the conventional alternator. The main advantages of using an alternator for start-up are silence and speed (400 ms compared with 800 ms for a conventional starter) ; an electronic unit, which manages the alternator and provides a link with the engine control unit and built-in systems interface. The system is completed by a battery, a special belt and a belt tensioner. C3 1.4i 16V SensoDrive Stop and Start: associated benefits Equipped with the 1.4i 16V engine launched in December 2003 and the SensoDrive automated gearbox, the C3 Stop and Start uses mechanical parts of advanced design in order to combine the gains offered by each component in terms of reduced fuel consumption and lower CO2 emissions. The 1.4i 16V engine develops 65 kW EEC (90 bhp DIN) at 5,250 rpm and maximum torque of 133 Nm at 3,250 rpm. To meet performance and consumption objectives, and to comply with the future Euro IV emission standard, the engine features continuously variable valve timing, a 16-valve cylinder head, and hydraulic roller cam followers for valve control. The C3 reports buoyant performance Launched in March 2002, the C3 continues to enjoy considerable commercial success on a market segment that accounts for almost 35% of sales in Europe. With more than 600,000 vehicles sold since launch, of which 340,000 in 2003 and already 190,000 in first-half 2004, Citroën has gradually increased its share of the European supermini segment from 9.2% in first-half 2004. Continuous upgrading is the rule for the C3 range. Today, the C3 is innovating with ecological and economical technology that brings enhanced comfort and well-being for all passengers.
