Compact two-seater with electro-hydraulic retractable steel roof

Rüsselsheim. The Tigra TwinTop comes with an electro-hydraulic retractable steel roof that opens and closes at the touch of a button, making Opel Germany’s first volume automaker to present a sporty two-seater of this kind.

photo by opel, 07-2004Depending on weather or mood, this dynamic-looking quick-change artist offers open air enjoyment or coupé driving pleasure. Thanks to its state-of-the-art, space-saving retractable roof, the Tigra offers over 500 liters of cargo space - the most in its class. This intelligent roof construction enabled a sleek design line from the front to the elegant and well-proportioned rear end. The compact two-seater was elected "Cabrio of the Year 2004" by an international jury of car journalists and experts at its premiere at the Geneva Motor Show. The Tigra TwinTop, which is manufactured in Cerizay (Western France) by the renowned coachbuilder Heuliez, will be available at the dealerships in September. Two modern ECOTEC gasoline engines ensure lively and economical performance: a 1.4-liter TWINPORT unit (66 kW/90 hp) or the 92 kW/125 hp 1.8-liter engine.

"With the Tigra TwinTop, we are addressing customers who are looking for a sporty and emotionally appealing car. The new Tigra’s well-balanced proportions make it a real eye-catcher, open or closed. The sophisticated kinematics of the Tigra’s intelligent roof technology are essential for the car’s sleek design and allowed us to avoid the drawbacks of conventional roof concepts. Our continuing model offensive sees these types of exciting niche models making up 20 percent of Opel’s product portfolio in the future," states Opel Chairman and Managing Director, Carl-Peter Forster. The Opel Tigra TwinTop’s particular highlight is its state-of-the-art, electro-hydraulically powered roof mechanism that opens and closes at the touch of a button. In contrast to previous roof systems that required roof parts to be laid on top of each other, taking up a lot of space in the trunk and creating a "plump" rear end, the Tigra’s engineers were able to develop a roof system with space-saving folding kinematics. This intelligent roof technology enabled the designers to create a harmonious and dynamic design from the front right up to the striking rear end.

This state-of-the-art roof design is also the key to the Tigra’s best-in-class storage space of more than 500 liters - 440 liters in the trunk and an additional 70 liters in a compartment right behind the seats. But even when the top is down, the two-seater still offers 250 liters of luggage capacity - plus the 70 liter space behind the seats, which is accessible from the passenger compartment. By maintaining the full height of the trunk, the Tigra always offers ample loading space. Particularly practical and convenient: just like the retractable roof, the trunk lid opens and closes electro-hydraulically at the touch of a button.

photo by opel, 07-2004The Opel Tigra TwinTop is a compact two-seater with harmonious proportions (length/width/height: 3.92/1.90/1.36 meters) and exciting design details: a matt chrome décor strip integrated in the trapezoidal radiator grille, the characteristic crease on the hood, the large air inlets in the bumper and the 3D-ellipsoid-headlights. The Tigra’s silhouette captivates with its short overhangs, sloping windshield, bold shoulder-line rising up to the rear end, slightly tapered sides and muscular side sills. Opel’s attention to detail is reflected in the air inlets hinted at in the front fenders, with their integrated turn-signal lights, the wave-shaped bar made of hydro-formed aluminum, and the striking styling of the roof. The rear section of the roof can be specified in a contrasting color (standard with Cosmo and Sport). The rear end’s large, wrap-around lights, the elegant matt chrome strip on the bumper and the visible tailpipe complete the TwinTop’s dynamic design.

The Opel Tigra TwinTop’s interior matches its sporty character with standard height-adjustable sport seats, chrome-ringed instruments as well as numerous applications in matt chrome. In the Sport and Cosmo versions, two matt chrome colored struts provide extra flair to the Tigra’s interior by optically connecting the center console with the transmission tunnel. Driver and passenger benefit from superb ergonomics and extensive standard equipment. In addition to the electro-hydraulic retractable steel roof all Tigra TwinTop versions feature power windows, electrically adjustable and heated power mirrors and remote-controlled central locking. The Tigra also boasts extensive standard safety equipment: two front and two side airbags, ESP, ABS, disk brakes all around and brake assistant provide a high level of passive and active safety. The specially tuned Tigra chassis (wheelbase: 2.49 meters) works together with direct steering and a torsionally rigid body for agile handling and refined ride. As of spring 2005 a special sport suspension will be offered for the Tigra TwinTop.

photo by opel, 07-2004Numerous extras and a wide range of accessories, from air-conditioning and seat heating to 17-inch light-alloy wheels or a custom-made luggage set allow customers to equip their Opel Tigra TwinTop individually according to their taste. State-of-the-art infotainment systems, introduced in the new Astra, are also available in the new Tigra. Two modern gasoline engines from the ECOTEC range ensure lively and economical performance: the 1.4 TWINPORT ECOTEC produces 66 kW (90 hp) and has especially low fuel consumption thanks to its innovative TWINPORT concept. Opel’s intelligent fuel-saving technology achieves significant reduction of fuel consumption through variable inlet control and high rates of exhaust gas recirculation.

The 92 kW (125 hp) 1.8 ECOTEC engine provides additional power and performance. A five-speed manual transmission is standard. As an option for the 1.4-liter TWINPORT engine, the "Easytronic" automated manual transmission is available.
