Powerful engines, dynamic suspension setup and
luxury-class features turn it into a state-of-the-art Gran Turismo.
Body and interior
The Audi A5 coupe is a design statement embodying
sportiness and elegance. Its dynamic silhouette and striking lines in interplay
with its accentuated surfaces, its expressive front end and distinctive rear
combine to create a highly attractive overall design. The broad, low body
measures 4.63 meters (15.19 ft) in length; its overall proportions
are defined by the short front overhang and elongated transition from the
C-post to the short tail end of the body. "The Audi A5 is the most beautiful
car I have ever designed," says Walter deSilva, Head of Volkswagen
Group Design. The extreme rigidity of the bodyshell is the foundation for
the cars precise roadholding, stability and ride comfort. The lightweight
body was built using state-of-the-art technologies; the front fenders are
made of aluminum. The four-seater offers full touring car capability in both
front and rear, and its trunk has a capacity of 455 liters (16.07 cubic
ft). The rear seat back has a split-fold feature which can be conveniently
unlocked from the trunk. The interior is marked by functional elegance and
uncompromising quality. The cockpit architecture is clearly oriented toward
the driver. In addition to the low-slung standard seats, Audi offers a number
of extra seating options including climate-controlled comfort seats with
built-in ventilation.
Drivetrain
The Audi A5 coupe is full of innovative technology
in its drivetrain components too: all the engines in the range are direct
injection units, with the TDI diesels featuring the advanced common rail
system. The gasoline engines employ FSI technology and also feature the Audi
valvelift system.
The range:
- 2.0 TFSI developing 132 kW (180 bp)
- 2.0 TFSI and 2.0 TFSI quattro developing 155 kW (211
bp)
- 3.2 FSI and 3.2 FSI quattro developing 195 kW (265 bp)
- 2.0 TDI and 2.0 TDI quattro developing 125 kW (170 bp)
- 2.7 TDI developing 140 kW (190 bp)
- 3.0 TDI quattro developing 176 kW (240 bp)
Transmission options offered by Audi for the A5 coupe
are the six-speed manual and the continuously variable multitronic. The 2.0
TFSI quattro optionally comes with the new seven-speed S tronic, which offers
greatly enhanced speed, comfort and efficiency. The quattro permanent four-wheel
drive system, featuring a dynamic 40 : 60 torque split, is fitted as standard
in the A5 3.0 TDI and available as an option for three of the other engine
variants.
Suspension
The Audi A5 coupe is the benchmark in its class in
terms of precision steering, true roadholding, high agility and superb ride
comfort. The front wheel suspension is a five-link setup, while the rear
axle is a trapezoidal link system with special kinematic characteristics.
At both the front and rear, the main suspension components are made of aluminum.
In the front-wheel drive versions, the new ESP electronic stabilization program
featuring an electronic differential lock will in future make the cars
handling even more dynamic. The large-dimensioned brakes can be applied precisely
as required. Options for the Audi A5 coupe include the Audi drive select
system, combined with dynamic steering and/or adaptive shock absorber control.
Audi drive select enables the driver to switch the characteristic of the
engine, automatic transmission and steering at will between
comfort, auto and dynamic modes.
Assistance and communications systems
The Audi coupe optionally features the high-tech adaptive
cruise control, Audi side assist and Audi lane assist systems. They regulate
the distance from the vehicle in front and help the driver to change lanes
or keep the car in lane. The Bang & Olufsen sound system provides a touch
of luxury for the ears. The Audi music interface (AMI) displays the menu
structure of a connected iPod on the monitor, and there is a Bluetooth cell
phone interface. The top-of-the-range navigation system in the A5 coupe is
one of Audis latest generation. It features a large-capacity hard disk
for navigation, music and telephone data; a high-resolution seven-inch display
with three-dimensional mapping; full-word voice input; and a DVD drive. With
the optional TV module and DAB digital audio, the system can be configured
into a true multimedia center.
