The Audi Q5 is the perfect
car for an active lifestyle.
Body and interior
The Audi Q5 is 4.63 meters (15.19 ft) long and
1.88 meters (6.17 ft) wide, but only 1.65 meters (5.41 ft)
high, giving it the sportiest proportions in its market category. Its drag
coefficient of just 0.33 also represents a top figure for its category. The
design is elegant and sculptured. The headlamps are optionally available
with xenon plus lamps and LED daytime running lights, in which case the rear
lamps are also LEDs. The side view is marked by large wheels and ascending
lines. The elegant roof contour emphasizes the lean appeal. The wrap-around
tailgate is made of aluminum, as is the hood. Body mountings can be ordered
in a choice of three finishes: black (standard), contrasting color or
body-colored. There are also two body packages which enable the look to be
styled to an even sportier or more robust note. The body of the Audi Q5
incorporates many high-strength and ultra-high-strength steel components.
These reduce weight and at the same time improve crash safety, rigidity and
vibrational behavior the impression created by the performance SUV
is of an utterly robust, comfortable and quiet car. The 2.81 meter (9.22
ft) wheelbase the best in the segment provides for plenty
of onboard space. The seats are ergonomically shaped and versatile in their
layout. The rear seat backs can be adjusted and laid flat by simply releasing
the catches in the luggage compartment. This increases the luggage capacity
from 540 to 1,560 liters (19.07 to 55.09 cubic ft); there is a second
storage compartment under the floor panel. In addition to the standard load
guard, options include a cargo securing kit, a luggage compartment liner
and a power tailgate. Another option Audi can supply on request is the so-called
rear bench seat plus, which can be adjusted by 100 millimeters (3.94 in)
and comes with a load-through facility. There is also the option of a folding
seat back for the front passengers seat. An optional climate-controlled
cup holder keeps drinks cold or hot as appropriate. A range of storage facilities
can be attached to a fixture in the front passengers footwell.
In the interior, the Q5 interprets Audis clear,
elegant design language. The cockpit is oriented toward the driver. It is
intuitive to use, and the craftsmanship as ever is uncompromising.
The use of fine materials imbues the interior with even greater visual impact.
The front seats can optionally be adjusted, heated and cooled electrically.
The electromechanical parking brake, the automatic climate control and a
display screen on the instrument cluster are standard. In the Q5 2.0 TDI
and the 2.0 TFSI manual, it indicates the recommended gear to select. A large
central monitor is also part of the standard package. If an MMI navigation
system is installed onboard, a large number of control functions are concentrated
in the terminal on the central tunnel. The operating system in the Q5 is
a new, enhanced generation.
Drivetrain
Audi specifies four engines for the Q5 two gasoline
and two TDIs. All engines are direct injection units. Three of them are
turbocharged. The torque of the gasoline engines is boosted by the Audi valvelift
system, which switches the valve lift in two stages. In the Q5 Audi deploys
its innovative technologies from the so-called modular efficiency system.
All variants of the SUV recuperate energy by way of the generator when
decelerating. Refined detailing reduces the internal friction of the engines.
The oil pump is controlled by the volumetric flow. In the warm-up phase part
of the cooling circuit is isolated. The power steering pump only ever transports
as much oil as is needed. The automatic climate control system also works
extremely economically.
The engine range:
- 2.0 TFSI quattro developing 155 kW (211 bp)
- 3.2 FSI quattro developing 199 kW (270 bp)
- 2.0 TDI quattro developing 125 kW (170 bp)
- 3.0 TDI quattro developing 176 kW (240 bp)
In the Q5 Audi introduces a new generation of the dynamic
S tronic system. The innovative dual-clutch transmission now has seven gears.
It changes gear in hundredths of a second, and offers a fascinating combination
of silky smooth shift comfort and high efficiency. Drivers can set the
seven-speed S tronic to change gear automatically or they can decide for
themselves when to shift gear, optionally also via shift paddles on the steering
wheel. In the Q5 drivetrain the differential is positioned in front of the
clutch and immediately behind the engine. This repositions the front axle
well forward, resulting in a long wheelbase and ideal axle load distribution.
Audi fits the Q5 with the quattro permanent four-wheel drive system as standard,
with a slightly rear-biased, sporty drive characteristic.
Suspension
The running gear, too, underscores the dynamic character
of the Audi Q5. The direct steering provides an intimate link between the
driver and the road. The five-link front suspension and trapezoidal-link
rear suspension are made substantially from aluminum, and the low-mounted
steering gear transmits steering wheel movements directly to the wheels.
Large brakes provide powerful deceleration. The standard wheel fit is 17-inchers
on the 2.0 TDI and 18-inchers in conjunction with all other power units.
Audi optionally offers up to 20-inch wheels. The ESP electronic stabilization
program offers functionality which no competitor can match. When a roof rack
is fitted, raising the center of gravity of the Q5, the ESP activates a little
earlier in the marginal range, providing for a highly dynamic basic
characteristic. With a trailer load limit of 2.4 metric tons (5291.09
lb) (braked, maximum gradient eight percent) the Audi Q5 is a powerful
towing vehicle. But the Audi Q5 also excels on rough terrain. Its maximum
gradient is an exceptionally high 31 degrees. The overhang angle at the front
and rear is 25 degrees; the ramp angle when unloaded is 17.6 degrees. It
has a 20 centimeter (7.87 in) ground clearance, and can drive through
water to a fording depth of 50 centimeters (19.69 in). The standard-fit
hill descent assist makes steep downhill slopes safer by holding vehicle
speed at below 30 km/h (18.64 mph). The ESP and ABS have special mapped
characteristics for offroad driving. Onroad too, a package of optional high-tech
features adds even more excitement to the driving experience. The Audi drive
select control system manages the engines throttle response, the power
steering servo assistance and the shift points of the S tronic. A choice
of three modes is available. If an MMI navigation system is installed, a
fourth map is provided, which drivers can program themselves as they wish.
Audi drive select comes with two innovative components: electronic shock
absorber control and the Audi dynamic steering system. Using a superposition
gear, it continuously varies the steering ratio and the power steering assistance
according to the vehicles speed directly at low speed and indirectly
at high speed. In the marginal range the dynamic steering system stabilizes
the Q5 in conjunction with the ESP by making minor adjustments to the
steering.
Assistance and communications systems
On request, Audi equips the Q5 with high-tech systems
typical of the luxury class. The Audi parking system advanced is a parking
aid with rearview camera, Audi lane assist helps the driver to stay in lane,
and Audi side assist alerts the driver to potential hazards when changing
lanes. The adaptive cruise control system keeps the performance SUV at a
constant distance from the vehicle ahead; the additional braking guard function
alerts the driver to the risk of collision. There is a particularly attractive
system of multimedia components available. The top-of-the-range specification,
MMI Navigation plus featuring a hard disk and DVD drive, provides connection
options for a Bluetooth telephone, a TV tuner, an intelligent voice control
system, a digital radio tuner, an iPod adapter and a high-end sound system
from Danish audio specialists Bang & Olufsen. The top-class navigation
system uses a high-resolution monitor for three-dimensional mapping. Its
hard disk can also store MP3 music files and phonebook entries.
