La vie à bord en 107... Joie et simplicité

Peugeot 107

The 107, which replaces the 106, provides Peugeot’s entry offer in the small car segment (B).

../../JPG/PEUGEOT/Pe000181.JPG, photo by peugeot 03-2005Overall, this market segment has increased by 32% in ten years due to the many different vehicles offered by a large number of manufacturers. Peugeot has already seen success in this segment with the dynamic 206 and will build on this success with the innovative 1007. Peugeot’s new small car has been developed and built in collaboration between PSA Peugeot Citroën and Toyota Motor Corporation. The 107 is manufactured at the Kolin plant in the Czech Republic, like its “two sister cars” that share the same platform.

Style

For the design of the Peugeot 107, the brief required the use of a shared mechanical specification, the use of an existing platform and the same front windscreen and front doors for all three marques. The Peugeot Style Centre set out to create a compact car, with an assertive character, versatile in use, but above totally at ease in an urban environment. The car therefore has very small front and rear overhangs, wheels placed “at each corner” and generously curved sections to give it presence. At the front, the 107 naturally exhibits the stylistic traits found on the latest Peugeots, with a youthful and playful face, expressed by a smiling “mouth” and wide eyes. Viewed from the side, the 5-door version achieves a balanced appearance by the use of a “wraparound” rear door that completely covers the rear quarter panels as far as the vertical rear light. Each of these lights extends flute-like from the rear of the roof and descends to the bumper, framing the tailgate formed by the fully glazed rear screen. Inside, the interior layout creates an impression of quality thanks to the vibrancy of its different components, particularly the back-lit central console activated when the lights come on at nightfall. Interior cloth trims specific to each Marque decorate the interior of the car.

A “magnetic” smile

Compact and user-friendly, a mite cheeky but with a genuine smile, the 107 invites you to share its infectious joie de vivre…Its appearance radiates the feline character specific to the Peugeot Marque, with expansive almond-shaped headlamps, a wide mouth, and a large, inclined front windscreen, not forgetting the large, rounded, vertical rear lights that frame an all-glass tailgate. Its “measured” non-conformism presents a mix of innovative lines, stylistic references and original curves. The lower front panel, featuring body-colour paintwork on all versions, demonstrates that character and simplicity are not mutually exclusive. Far from being the entry point to the Peugeot range, the young and sparkling 107 is, on the contrary, a breath of fresh air.

Attuned to the city

Its preferred playground is the city. Those who commute there, who park there, who while away the time there - often dreaming of escaping from its clutches - will be very appreciative of its smile, its roguishness and its versatility, features that are prominent on both the 3- and 5-door versions.
Compact
The 107 equals 3.43 m of city delight! Being 25 cm shorter than a 106, the 107 is one of the most compact 4-seater saloons on the market. Its width of 1.63 m easily accommodates its occupants, while at the same time allowing them to thread in and out of traffic. Its height of 1.465 m contributes to the overall stylistic balance, whilst ensuring excellent headroom. Thanks to a generous wheelbase of 2.34 m, the driver’s seat is placed well forward, offering good all-round visibility enhanced by the microscopic overhang and the “four-corner” wheels. Rear-view vision is good too, thanks to a generous rear screen with a rear windscreen wiper as standard and large door mirrors, adjustable from the interior, that allow the driver to keep an eye on following traffic.
Handling
A small car with reduced overhang, the 107 benefits from a turning circle of less than 10 m. This easy urban manoeuvrability, combined with the flexibility of electric power steering, makes the 107 particularly easy to handle.

Tailor-made engineering …

Well able to thread its way down a narrow street, make light of traffic jams, saunter at low speed or make a dash for the countryside, the 107 comes with three power trains ideally suited to these requirements. Placing emphasis on dynamic performance and the ability to negotiate traffic, they also perform well on the open road, whilst reducing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions to a minimum.
Petrol engine

3 cylinders, 12 valves, Euro 4 - 2 ACT and VVT system - 998 cm3 - 50 kW (approx. 68 bhp) at 6 000 rpm – 93 Nm at 3 600 rpm, designed by Toyota Motor Corporation. It can be combined with two gearboxes:
- a manual 5-speed gearbox
- a 5-speed 2 Tronic gearbox.
The absence of a clutch pedal is particularly well suited to urban driving. Its two operating modes allows either full automatic use, or a more active approach involving unassisted, one-touch use of the floor-mounted gear lever.
Diesel HDi Diesel engine

4 cylinders, 8 valves, Euro 4, with Common Rail direct injection, 1 398 cm3 - 40 kW (approx. 54 bhp) at 4 000 rpm - 130 Nm at 1 750 rpm, designed by PSA Peugeot Citroën. This engine comes exclusively with a manual 5-speed gearbox.
Performance / Fuel consumption
A generous, spontaneous and lightweight car (the 3-door petrol version has a kerb weight of just 790 kg), the 107 copes easily with the changing pace of urban life and has enough zest to venture occasionally outside its confines. Its predicament: an inability to compromise between minimal fuel consumption and minimal greenhouse gas emissions… the kind of problem its owners or the environment will be pleased to have!

Deceptively easy to drive …

The 107 keeps smiling regardless of how it is used, due to its road-holding abilities and the protection it offers its occupants. The suspension design and geometry was chosen to ensure dynamic and safe road holding, easy to control both on dry and wet surfaces. It comprises:

- a Mc Pherson type front wishbone with anti-roll bar
- a rear axle with a deformable cross-member
- 14” wheels with 155/65R14 tyres
- ventilated front disc brakes with a diameter of 247 mm and a thickness of 22 mm
- rear drum brakes with a diameter of 200 mm
- electric power steering

All 107s are equipped as standard with Bosch ABS 8 incorporating electronic brake force distribution and a CSC (Cornering Stability Control) system. The latter improves stability during braking in bends, outside the normal ABS regulation. An electronic stability program (ESP) will be available as an option within a few months.

Not in the least scared…!

To ensure the optimum safety of its passengers, the 107 relies on its structure and chassis legs for high speed impact protection, no mean task when a small car has to absorb impact energy quickly. In addition, it comes with additional devices for “close-up protection”, helping to reduce the effects of impact to a minimum:

- a steering column that retracts over a distance of 73 mm, thereby reducing the risk of intrusion,
- padding in the lower part of the bulkhead,
- front air bags with a capacity of 60 litres for the driver and 90 litres for the passenger, the latter with a de-activation switch allowing installation of a rear-facing child seat,
- front seat belts with pretensioners and low calibration force limiters (450 daN),
- front seats with anti-submarining seat cushions,
- front door padding for optimal absorption of side energy,
- side air bags with a capacity of 9 litres intended to protect the chest of occupants (as standard or optional according to versions and destinations),
- curtain air bags with a capacity of 24 litres intended to protect the heads of front and rear passengers (option).

In addition, to encourage the driver to fasten their seat belt, a buzzer and a visual alarm are triggered if the seat belt is not fastened. Each passenger seat can accommodate a child seat, while the 50/50 rear bench seat is equipped on both sides with Isofix fixtures incorporating three anchorage points for the installation of an Isofix child seat. This overall design places the 107 in the best possible position to satisfy EuroNcap criteria for the protection of occupants.

Lastly, in the design of the front of the vehicle and the layout of the different mechanical components of the 107, careful attention has been paid to the consequences of a collision with a pedestrian. Thanks to a special “beam” in front of the bumper and a bonnet that creates the maximum possible distance between it and mechanical components underneath, pedestrian protection is maximised.

Life on board the 107… simple and carefree

../../JPG/PEUGEOT/Pe000182.JPG, photo by peugeot 03-2005Inside the 107, relaxation is the order of the day. The passenger compartment simply refuses to be downhearted, as demonstrated by certain styling choices: the exterior body colour is repeated inside the doors where bright colours are welcome, the user-friendly central console used to control the heating and air conditioning incorporates a spectacular translucent material with orange back-lighting, while the fascia panel with its dual moulded contours features a very chic “diamond” texture. This stylistic “exuberance” combines delightfully with the simplicity of design embodied by the seats and their integral head restraints, or indeed the instrument panel with its large central dial placed on the steering column, from which a remotely mounted rev counter can be attached. An excellent antidote to gloominess, the 107 is a real car, simple to use and enjoy.
Space for the occupants…
With the architecture of the 107 making it possible to place the front windscreen well forward, the feeling of space in the front seats is perceptible and is accentuated both by the elegant fascia panel, which tapers in to the sculpted door panels, and by the slender seats with integral head restraints, specially designed for this car. By asserting its independence, the passenger compartment reserves as much space as possible for the comfort of occupants and their in-car enjoyment. Both front seats can be moved over a distance of 240 mm and inclined by means of a variable adjustment lever. The 3-door version adds a slide release mechanism allowing access to the rear seats, combined with a courtesy control making it easy to tilt the seat either from the adjoining seat or from the rear seats.

Their structure and padding have been specially optimised to ensure a good level of safety and comfort with the minimum of congestion, thereby creating space for the knees and feet of rear passengers. The rear seating comprises a fixed bench seat and a seat back that folds either in one piece or 50/50 and can accommodate “curved” head restraints as standard or as an option. The seat backs can be unlocked easily by means of two release catches accessible from the boot, allowing the latter to be enlarged easily by folding the seat backs onto the bench seat.
An extendable boot
The boot volume at the height of the rear seats is around 200 dm3 VDA without the rear parcel shelf, and 139 dm3 with the parcel shelf, due to its low position. Since the distance between the rear seats and the load sill is 477 mm, the boot can hold sports bags, certain types of pushchair and always… packs of mineral water. Need some extra space?

With the seats folded, the available rear volume to roof height is increased to 751 dm3, and the length to the front seats is extended to 1 093 mm. Had a puncture? A “normal” spare wheel is available … housed in a well at the bottom of the boot to provide a secure location. The numerous ingenious storage areas found in the moulded components can accommodate everyday objects:

- a large open glove box,
- storage under the steering wheel,
- storage in the instrument panel and central console,
- cup holders in the console.

Storage pockets in the front door panels put road maps and tourist guides within easy reach, while at the rear, 5-door versions offer almost the same level of generous storage space, with optional opening hinged rear windows. In 3-door versions, a smaller storage space is available in the rear panels.
The atmosphere inside - quite simply comfortable …
On all 107s, the distribution of cool or warm air is assured by two directional “ball” shaped air vents either side of the fascia panel, while ventilation is directed along the length of the car via a wide circulation grille that gently diffuses air. Air conditioning with air recirculation and a pollen and fine-particle filter is available as an option. The windows are either manual or electric. For the latter, there is a rocker switch on each door. Door locking can be controlled remotely, as standard or as an option, using a two-button HF plip.
Music!
The radio offered as standard or as an option, according to destinations, is stylishly incorporated in the front panel and provides an indication of the time as soon as the ignition is switched on. It comprises:

- a mono CD player,
- an auxiliary front socket for connection of an external MP3 player,
- two 100 mm speakers.

Accessories include a CD auto changer and two 165 mm speakers that can be installed on the rear parcel shelf. Without the radio, the 107 is pre-wired and comes with a roof aerial.

Exterior colours and interior trims

Lively and visual or more classic, the range of exterior colours is composed of eight shades:

Three plain colours:
- Lipizan White,
- Scarlet Red
- Citrus Yellow

Five metallic colours:
- Caldera Black,
- Gallium Grey,
- Carlinite Grey,
- Damas Blue,
- Linarite Blue.

The unique design of the seat trim evokes a sense of dynamism. On the first level, “Nokimate” trim covers the seats with a black/dark grey or sandy beige/dark grey mesh, while on second level the seats are decorated with a “Transcodage” woven fabric in either dark grey or Terre de Cassel beige, accompanied by a matching mesh.

The same smile for two silhouettes and two levels of finish

The 107 range, simple and bright, is based on two 3- and 5-door silhouettes, two levels of finish and three power trains. The basic 107 comes with equipment and features essential for a small, modern and mainly urban vehicle, competitively priced and offering in particular front air bags and ABS, power steering* adjustable steering wheel*, rear windscreen wiper, adjustable rear-view mirrors, a full-size spare wheel, and body-colour bumpers with black protective capping. On the second level, side air bags*, electric windows, remote-controlled door locking, body coloured door mirrors and door handles, 50/50 rear bench seat with rear head restraints and side protection are added to the equipment of the basic version.
