Audi S and RS models

Superior performance, stylish understatement, refined equipment and fittings and a high degree of everyday practicality – the Audi S models combine all those attributes to create perfectly harmonized concepts.

The first Audi S2 Coupe was launched in April 1990. At present there are seven models in the portfolio: the S3, the S4, the S5 Coupe, the S5 Cabriolet, the S6, the S8 and the TTS. Each model features quattro permanent four-wheel drive as standard, providing supremely assured power transmission and ensuring firm grip with high stability. Since 1994 the RS models, with their immensely powerful engines and quattro permanent four-wheel drive have formed the dynamic spearhead of the Audi model program. Presented by Audi subsidiary quattro GmbH, they are consistently sporty in design and performance.

Audi S3 and S3 Sportback

../../JPG/AUDI/Audi0398.jpg, photo by audi 2009 The top-of-the-range variants of the A3 model series are the Audi S3 and the S3 Sportback developing 195 kW (265 bp) of power output. They have raised the benchmark in their class, to the sports car level. The three-door S3 sprints to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 5.7 seconds, and achieves a governed top speed of 250 km/h (155.34 mph). The two-liter direct injection turbocharged TFSI is a high-performance engine. The Audi S3 comes with a manual six-speed transmission, featuring short-ratio gearing with reduced gear lever travel. Its quattro permanent four-wheel drive incorporates an electronically controlled hydraulic multi-plate clutch to distribute the power. The S3 is set 25 millimeters (0.98 in) lower than an A3 on the standard chassis. Aluminum pivot bearings and transverse links reduce unsprung masses; stiffened chassis mounts and a sportier steering characteristic enhance precision. 18-inch alloy wheels deliver the power to the road efficiently, while a 17-inch brake system ensures reliable deceleration.

Audi S4 and S4 Avant

../../JPG/AUDI/Audi0399.jpg, AUDI S4, photo by audi 2009 The new Audi S4 and the S4 Avant are like highly trained athletes. Their engine – the 3.0 TFSI – is compressor-supercharged and highly throttle-responsive. The V6 combines a 245 kW (333 bp) power output and 440 Nm (324.53 lb-ft) of torque with an astonishingly low fuel consumption of 9.7 liters per 100 km (24.25 US mpg) (Avant: 9.9 liters per 100 km (23.76 US mpg)). The sedan sprints to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 5.1 seconds, while the Avant takes 5.2 seconds. The electronic governor limits the top speed to 250 km/h (155.34 mph). A six-speed manual transmission is fitted as standard. The quattro permanent four-wheel drive delivers the power to the road solidly. A sports suspension, lowering the vehicle body by 20 millimeters (0.79 in), and a high-performance brake system ensure the power is well controlled. The wheels are 18 inches in diameter. A package of optional performance technologies further extends the technology lead of the S4 and the S4 Avant. The seven-speed S tronic shifts gear without interrupting the power flow; the new sports differential distributes the power variably between the rear wheels when cornering at speed. With Audi drive select the driver can influence the operating mode of the engine, the sport differential and the S tronic at will. Dynamic steering and an adaptive damper control system round off the package.

Audi S5 Coupe

../../JPG/AUDI/Audi0400.jpg, AUDI S5 COUPE, photo by audi 2009 The 4.2 liter eight-cylinder engine in the Audi S5 Coupe develops 260 kW (354 bp) of power and delivers a maximum 440 Nm (324.53 lb-ft) of torque, based on the FSI direct injection system. The manual transmission version of the powerful coupe accelerates to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in just 5.1 seconds, combining exhilarating high-revving, spontaneous responsiveness and throaty sound. Audi offers the sportier six-speed tiptronic transmission as an option in place of the manual box. The S sports suspension setup of the Audi S5 Coupe is highly dynamic. The high-performance brake system – identifiable by the black-painted calipers with the S5 logo – provides strong deceleration, while the 18-inch wheels and wide tires maintain a firm grip on the road. The S5 Coupe also features the high-tech Audi drive select suspension control system as an option, including adaptive shock absorber control and dynamic steering.

Audi S6 and S6 Avant

../../JPG/AUDI/Audi0401.jpg, AUDI S6 AVANT, photo by audi 2009 The Audi S6 is powered by a 5.2 liter V10 engine which sets the large S model apart from its competitors. With its FSI fuel injection system, the 10-cylinder naturally-aspirated unit develops 320 kW (435 bp) of power and 540 Nm (398.28 lb-ft) of torque. The cultivated, throaty-sounding engine delivers exhilarating performance: The S6 sedan races to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 5.2 seconds, and the Avant takes just a tenth of a second more. Top speed is governed to 250 km/h (155.34 mph). The transmission is managed by a six-speed tiptronic system, optimized to rapid gear-shifting. Like all Audi S models, the S6 also applies its superior power to the road with quattro permanent four-wheel drive. The servotronic steering system is very direct, while behind the 19-inch wheels sit internally ventilated 18-inch brake disks.

Audi S8

../../JPG/AUDI/Audi0402.jpg, AUDI S8, photo by audi 2009 The Audi S8 is also powered by a 5.2 liter V10 FSI engine, developing 331 kW (450 bp) and 540 Nm (398.28 lb-ft) of torque. It enables the luxury sedan to attain the performance levels of a high-caliber sports car. The Audi S8 sprints to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 5.1 seconds. Its top speed is governed at 250 km/h (155.34 mph). That outstanding performance is also achieved thanks to the car’s low overall weight – primarily based on the lightweight aluminum body. The S8 features a six-speed tiptronic transmission. A lower final ratio than for the A8 has been selected, and the transmission control unit has been optimized for dynamic gear shifts. The S8 applies its power to the road in typical Audi supremely assured fashion by means of the quattro permanent four-wheel drive system. The sophisticated system of trailing arms and links is configured more sportily than the volume model in terms of elastokinematics, with a stiffer setup of the adaptive air suspension. The steering, too, is direct, and delivers even greater agility. The S8 is fitted with 20-inch wheels as standard. The four disks of the 18-inch brake system are ventilated and of generous size. Ceramic brakes are optionally available.

Audi TTS

../../JPG/AUDI/Audi0403.jpg, AUDI TTS, photo by audi 2009 The TTS – available in Coupe or Roadster form – is the compact class sports car from Audi. Its two-liter TFSI is a high-performance engine. The turbocharged direct injection unit develops 200 kW (272 bp) and delivers 350 Nm (258.15 lb-ft) of torque. It accelerates the TTS Coupe with S tronic from zero to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 5.2 seconds, up to a governed top speed of 250 km/h (155.34 mph). Thanks to its largely aluminum body, the Audi TTS is extremely lightweight – the Coupe with manual transmission weighs in at just 1,395 kilograms (3075.45 lb). In combination with the optional six-speed S tronic, the highly efficient TFSI in the Coupe consumes on average just 7.9 liters of fuel per 100 km (29.77 US mpg); the Roadster’s consumption is 8.0 l/100 km (29.40 US mpg). The S tronic shifts gear lightning-fast under high load and at high revs, while the quattro permanent four-wheel drive transmits the power to the ground with virtually no loss. The core of the system – the hydraulic multi-plate clutch – is able to redistribute the power as required in fractions of a second thanks to its high-efficiency pressure accumulator. The TTS is fitted as standard with the Audi magnetic ride adaptive shock absorber system. In normal mode, the TTS is well-balanced and comfortable on the road. In ‘sport’ mode it translates the potential of its sports suspension (which lowers the vehicle body by 10 millimeters (0.39 in)) into uncompromisingly dynamic handling. The high-performance brake system brings the car reliably and safely to a stop.

Audi RS 6 and RS 6 Avant

../../JPG/AUDI/Audi0404.jpg, AUDI RS 6 AVANT, photo by audi 2009 The RS 6 – in sedan and Avant form – is the high-performance athlete in the A6 model family. With exhilarating performance and breathtaking dynamism, it is in a motoring league of its own. Both body variants offer the full luxury of the Audi business-class full-size model. The V10 engine delivers a competition-beating 426 kW (580 bp) of power and 650 Nm (479.42 lb-ft) of torque. Its five-liter engine utilizes technologies from motorsport including FSI gasoline direct injection, twin-turbo supercharging, the 10-cylinder design concept, and dry sump lubrication. This takes the Audi RS 6 to the level of a high-performance sports car. The sedan sprints from zero to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in just 4.5 seconds, and hits 200 km/h (124.27 mph) just 10 seconds later. On request, Audi can boost the electronically governed top speed from 250 km/h (155.34 mph) to 280 km/h (173.98 mph). The six-speed tiptronic belongs to the new sporty generation of Audi automatic transmissions. Improved oil ducting makes its gear-shifting even faster, while transmission ratios are purposely made short. In the S sport mode, the tiptronic changes up later; the driver can also shift manually. The quattro drive, with its slightly rear-biased setup, is also highly dynamic. The stiff sports suspension setup assuredly handles the power delivered by the biturbo V10. The standard Dynamic Ride Control (DRC) reduces pitch and roll by purely mechanical means. The diagonally opposed pairs of shock absorbers are linked by hydraulic lines and a central valve. When cornering at speed, the valves regulate the oil flow in the shock absorber of the deflected front wheel. They strengthen the support provided and reduce lateral tilt. The system can be upgraded to the sports suspension plus level with a three-stage adaptive damper control system. The two RS 6 models are fitted as standard with 19-inch wheels. Behind them are 19" high-performance brakes with six-piston fixed calipers. The optional 20-inch wheels permit use of ceramic brake disks. These are light, strong, durable and large – with a diameter of 420 millimeters (16.54 in) at the front and 356 millimeters (14.02 in) at the rear. The electronic stabilization program ESP can be disabled in two stages.
