Audi A6 and A6 Avant

The Audi luxury-class model series has proved a great success – for many good reasons.

../../JPG/AUDI/Audi0390.jpg, AUDI A6, photo by audi 2009 The elegant large body, refined interior, well-balanced suspension and sporty, efficient engines are consistent attributes of the A6 and A6 Avant.

Body and interior

The A6 has an expressive face. Daytime running lights are built into the headlamps. In the optional xenon plus system they form a horizontal strip of LEDs. The sedan and Avant are 4.93 meters (16.17 ft) long, 1.86 meters (6.10 ft) wide and 1.46 meters (4.79 ft) high. LEDs in the rear lamps ensure optimum light emission. The spacious interior, with its refined lines and perfect craftsmanship, has the feel of a luxury lounge. As an even more luxurious optional extra, Audi offers single leather seats for the rear. A bundle of high-tech measures ensure excellent soundproofing. Subtle aluminum and chrome elements underscore the refined ambience.

Drivetrain and suspension

../../JPG/AUDI/Audi0391.jpg, AUDI A6 AVANT, photo by audi 2009 One of the great strengths of the Audi A6 is its wide range of engine options. Five gasoline engines and four diesels with four, six and eight cylinders are available – all offering the advantages of direct injection with cutting-edge FSI, TFSI and TDI technology. Torque from the 2.8 liter V6 gasoline engines is further enhanced by the Audi valvelift system. An attractive new addition to the engine lineup is the 3.0 liter V6 developing 213 kW (290 hp). The 3.0 TFSI is supercharged by a compressor – a solution that does not increase fuel consumption but delivers spontaneous responsiveness. Powerful torque is delivered right from idling, and is an impressive 420 Nm (309.78 lb-ft) across a wide revs range. Zero to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) is achieved in 5.9 seconds. Yet the powerful V6 consumes on average just 9.4 liters per 100 km (25.02 US mpg). Another exceptional model is the Audi A6 2.0 TDI e, which uses the two-liter diesel power unit developing 100 kW (136 bp) and 320 Nm (236.02 lb-ft) of torque. Taking 10.3 seconds for the zero to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) sprint and with a top speed of 208 km/h (129.25 mph), it is extremely agile yet on average consumes just 5.3 liters per 100 km (44.38 US mpg). This top-class performance is founded on the concerted use of new technologies, including a demand-controlled power steering pump and a generator that recuperates energy when in overrun. The e model’s body is set 20 millimeters (0.79 in) lower, and has a very low drag coefficient. The transmission ratios are longer in the two top gears.

The engine range:
- 2.0 TFSI developing 125 kW (170 bp)
- 2.8 FSI and 2.8 FSI quattro developing 140 kW (190 bp)
- 2.8 FSI and 2.8 FSI quattro developing 162 kW (220 bp)

- 3.0 TFSI quattro developing 213 kW (290 bp)
- 4.2 FSI quattro developing 257 kW (350 bp)
- 2.0 TDI developing 100 kW (136 bp)
- 2.0 TDI developing 125 kW (170 bp)
- 2.7 TDI and 2.7 TDI quattro developing 140 kW (190 bp)

- 3.0 TDI quattro developing 176 kW (240 bp)

The engine power is transmitted to the front wheels, or to all four wheels, by either a manual box, the user-friendly tiptronic or the continuously variable multitronic transmission system. For all engine variants developing 140 kW (190 bp) and more, Audi offers quattro four-wheel drive as an option; it is standard with the top-of-the-range engines. The suspension – featuring a four-link setup on the front axle and trapezoidal links at the rear – combines distinctly sporty character with supreme comfort. As an option, customers can have the A6 fitted with adaptive air suspension. The driver can switch between three settings to alter the adaptive dampers’ performance and characteristics.

Assistance and communications systems

State-of-the-art assistance systems enhance the comfort and convenience of driving the A6. Audi side assist helps the driver when changing lane. Other high-tech features include the Audi lane assist lane-keeping aid, the radar-assisted adaptive cruise control system which adjusts the speed of the A6 to maintain the appropriate distance to the vehicle ahead and warns of potential collisions, and the Audi parking system advanced, incorporating a rearview camera. The A6 features a new generation of the Audi multimedia interface MMI, with even more user-friendly control and much-advanced technology. The graphics chip and the monitor both raise the technical benchmark. The seven-inch monitor offers extremely high-resolution, high-contrast images in pin-sharp quality. A 3D bird’s eye view is offered as an option for the navigation system mapping. The system is able to understand complete words when the driver inputs a destination. Another new feature is the facility to have the navigation system select the most economical route. The full-spec version of the new MMI is a truly high-tech system. Its core components are a DVD drive and a 40 GB hard drive to hold navigation data, music files and up to 10,000 phonebook entries. A double radio tuner and a six-channel sound system also come as standard. Optional extras include a TV tuner and DAB digital radio. The MMI phone performs all the functions of the driver’s cell phone through a Bluetooth interface.
